Fuhong Shi * (born in 1976, Shenyang,
China)
A native of Shenyang, China, She learned to play the
piano at the age of eight, and began to study composition at
fourteen. She graduated from the music school affiliated with the
Shenyang Conservatory of Music in 1995, where she received the
highest entrance exam score on the National Examinations for
admission to the Central
Conservatory of Music (CCOM) in Beijing. At the CCOM she studied
composition with Dr.
Jianping
Tang, and received a Bachelor’s degree in composition in 2000.
She then earned a Master’s degree in composition under the direction
of Drs.
John Celona and
Dániel Péter Biró
at the University of Victoria in 2005. In the fall 2005, she began
her doctoral studies with Professor
Gary Kulesha at the
University of Toronto, where she is funded with a full University
fellowship, and the Drs. Doris and Sam Lau Graduate Fellowship in
Music.
She was the recipient of a number of awards at the 6th composition
contest of the Taiwanese Symphony Orchestra in 1997, at the 1st
Yanhuang Cup Composition Competition in 1998, and at the Traditional
Music Composition Contest of Tai Wan National Chinese Orchestra in
2002. Sheng Sheng Man was performed in 2003 at Bard College
in a concert titled, “New Voices from China: 8 Composers Under 30.”
Free and Unfettered Saunter was performed by the
Hong Kong Chinese
Orchestra in 2003. Dialogue II was selected for the
Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra’s Jean Coulthard Readings in 2005. Refractions
was selected by
Quatuor Bozzini’s workshop in April 2005 in Montreal. Also in
2005, Dialogue was performed in Beijing Concert Hall,
celebrating the 55th Anniversary of CCOM. In 2006, She was among the
five composers selected by the fourth annual
National Arts Centre
Young Composers Program in Ottawa. She is a finalist in 2006
Tsang-Houei Hsu International Music Composition Award. Her
compositions were performed by 2005-06 & 2007 University of Toronto
New Music Festival. Most recently, her new piece for chamber
ensemble Lightenings was commissioned by Spiralis Music Trust
(U.S.A.) and performed by the
New Music Concerts in
Glenn Gould Studio Toronto on February 16, 2007.
